A story of member Marlyse Voss: Bridging Psychology and Coaching: A Journey of Growth and Balance

This month, we put the spotlight on Marlyse Voss — psychologist, coach, and founder of Psychologenpraktijk Voss Utrecht and VossCoaching. With years of experience in both clinical and organizational settings, she bridges the worlds of therapy and coaching - helping individuals and teams reconnect with what truly matters.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I run my own psychology practice in Utrecht - Psychologenpraktijk Voss Utrecht - where I work with adults facing mild to moderate psychological challenges, such as anxiety, panic, meaning and purpose issues, low mood, stress, grief and loss, relationship challenges, and recovery or prevention of burnout.

Alongside that, I founded VossCoaching in 2016, a coaching bureau that works with both individuals and organizations. Together with a small team of psychologists, we tailor each trajectory to the person or situation. We combine psychological coaching with more body-oriented methods, such as haptonomy, boxing therapy, and yoga.

Since this year, we also offer multidisciplinary burnout programs, designed to support sustainable recovery and reintegration.

How did you get to where you are today?

I’ve known from a young age that I wanted to become a psychologist complete with the classic therapy sofa. I studied Social Psychology, and after graduation, I started working in mental health care, where I gained valuable experience with clinical cases.

Over time, I began to see the limits of that work: clients were often deeply unwell, and motivation for change could be limited. I longed for a way of working that felt closer to daily life, one that focused more on recovery, meaning, and personal growth. That’s how VossCoaching came to life. Today, my work is grounded in Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), an approach that fits perfectly with how I view change: flexible, human, and centered around what truly matters to my clients.

Next year, I’ll start the EFT couples therapy training, so I can also welcome couples into my practice.

Was it scary to start your own business?

Not really. I’ve wanted this for so long that it felt like the most natural next step.
If I could do it again, I might have gone fully independent earlier, instead of combining entrepreneurship with employment. Running your own practice takes courage but it also brings tremendous freedom to work in a way that feels right for both you and your clients.

What kind of clients do you work with?

At Psychologenpraktijk Voss Utrecht, I focus on individual therapy sessions with adults who are struggling but motivated to understand what’s happening and to regain direction.

At VossCoaching, I work more collaboratively with other professionals. There, our focus is on employees, leaders, and professionals who want to grow, exploring effectiveness, leadership, boundaries, and balance.

What I love most is being able to bridge both worlds, supporting people in their personal growth as well as their professional development, since the two are often beautifully intertwined.

What advice would you give to other coaches or therapists starting out?

Do the work that makes your heart skip a beat, and go all in. Trust yourself, trust your craft. Keep learning, stay true to your values, and prioritize quality, the rest will follow naturally.

How did you find Stories?

I came across Stories online and immediately felt drawn to its atmosphere and aesthetic. It perfectly reflected what I value: professionalism, calmness, and attention to detail.

Why did you choose Stories?

I really appreciated the flexibility to start small, just a few hours a month, which gave me the space to build my practice at a sustainable pace. The design and overall atmosphere of Stories align beautifully with how I envision my own practice: personal, refined, and thoughtfully crafted.
